AI Fakery in the News
Through my work in AI and the media I am sometimes asked to comment on the veracity of stories in the news by BBC Verify. It's becoming increasingly difficult to identify manipulated images, but with a little investigation you can usually detect when it is not as it should be. The example below was a viral photo showing a dog which apparently had rescued a kitten in a flood. Except that the dog and cat wierdly merged together in the photo - a classic sign that a generative AI had been at work here. Why would anyone fake this? Turns out there have been previous stories about dogs rescuing cats that were wildly popular in the past - this is a guaranteed clickbait image that will earn you lots of clicks, followers, ad revenue - take your pick. I'm just saddened that people feel it is ok to manipulate others for their own personal gain. A simple but familiar equation: AI+greed = no morals.
